Have You Ever Made a Time Capsule?

A memorable event to share with your family…

As some of you know, I’m all about creating and sharing memories for my family. Eleven years ago I saw a family on T.V. make a time capsule, they buried it and then they dug it up some years later in amazement to see how many things in their lives had changed.  A Time Capsule might have: letters from family members, ages of you and your children, what you and your children are doing now, where you are living now, pictures of yourselves and your family members, where you are now financially and where you think you will be in10 years, and some personal goals.

Your children might put their favorite play toy, or you might put a local newspaper in the time capsule. Your Time Capsule can be placed in a metal box, or a tool box you purchase at a local hardware store. The whole idea or exercise is to create something fun for the family to do together and something to look forward to do to create memories in the future.

Almost 10 years ago (my family thought I was a little crazy) I shared the idea of making a time capsule and burying it for 10 years. I shared with them the idea of what fun it would be to write a letter to ourselves of where we are now in life and what we think our lives would look like in 10 years. It took almost three months for everyone to write their letter and decide what they wanted to put in the Time Capsule. On March 24, 2000 we gathered all of our letters, our special trinkets and photos and drove up Mt. Diablo together and buried our Time Capsule in a special spot. Actually Jim and  Elaine (my father and mother-in-law), Kathy, my wife, and Emily, our daughter, started really getting excited about what we were doing. I measured how far we drove our car up Mt. Diablo, I took pictures of the exact site where we buried the capsule so I wouldn’t forget. I even took at picture of us standing over the site, I don’t know why because none of us have changed a bit in appearance in the last 10 years, ha!! ha!!. I also made copies of all of our letters just in case nature decided to trick us.

I had so much fun creating this Time Capsule for my family, I shared the idea with two of my bicycle friends and we made a Time Capsule for us too, and yes we buried it up on Mt. Diablo just like we did with my family, but in a different spot.

During these last 10 years we’ve all talked about those two Time Capsules we buried. Wow has life changed for Kathy and I and our children in 10 years. In 2000 we were living in Clayton, California, I was a full time Real Estate Broker, Kathy was selling new homes, our children were 17 and 24 years old, they both were single and now they both are married with children and now  we live in Brentwood, California and we are both retired from our jobs.   I am a full time investor and having fun.   The only unfortunate thing that life threw at us is that Kathy’s father, Jim, passed away a year and a half ago, but we know he will be with us in spirit when we uncover our Time Capsule on March 24, 2010.

If you want to create a wonderful memory with your family, I highly recommend that you make a Time Capsule. It’s the beginning of 2010, so in 10 years it will be 2020. Just think of all the changes you and your family will go through in 10 years. Where will you be living? Will you still be working or will you be retired? Just think of all the changes that will take place in technology and in the world. How wonderful to think we will have world peace by then!
